Abstract

The Bayesian approach involves collecting data from past experience in order to reach conclusions about future events. Bayesian methods have become increasingly popular in recent years, notably in medical research. There are a large number of books on Bayesian analysis, but very few that cover clinical trials and biostatistical applications in any capacity. There is no book available that is introductory in nature and covers such a broad array of essential topics. This book provides a valuable overview of this rapidly evolving field, not only for statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry, but also to anyone involved in conducting clinical trials and HTA work. Comprehensive coverage of Bayesian methods in medical research Illustrated throughout by case studies and worked examples Authors are at the forefront of research into Bayesian methods in medical research Suitable for those with a limited statistical background Accompanied by a Web site featuring data sets and worked examples in WinBUGS - the most widely accepted Bayesian modelling package

Abstract

A considerable number of journal publications using a range of qualitative synthesis approaches has been published. Mary Dixon-Woods and colleagues (Mary Dixon-Woods, Booth, & Sutton, 2007) identified 42 qualitative evidence synthesis papers published in health care literature between 1990 and 2004. An ongoing update by Hannes and Macaitis (2010)identified around 100 additional qualitative or mixed methods syntheses. Yet these generally lack a clear, detailed description of what was done and why (Greenhalgh et al, 2007; McInnes & Wimpenny, 2008) . Choices are most commonly influenced by what others have successfully used in the past or by a particular school of thought (Atkins et al, 2008; Britten et al, 2002). This is a substantive limitation. This book brings balance to the options available to researchers, including approaches that have not had a substantial uptake among researchers. It provides arguments for when and why researchers or other parties of interest should opt for a certain approach to synthesis, which challenges they might face in adopting it and what the potential strengths and weaknesses are compared with other approaches. This book acts as a resource for readers who would otherwise have to piece together the methodology from a range of journal articles. In addition, it should stimulate further development and documentation of synthesis methodology in a field that is characterized by diversity.

Abstract

This book is aimed at researchers, practitioners and graduate students who have some exposure to traditional methods of survival analysis. The emphasis is on semiparametric methods based on the proportional hazards model. The inclusion of examples with SAS and S-PLUS code will make the book accessible to most working statisticians.

Abstract

The question of how to generate sufficient revenue to pay for health care has become a serious concern for nearly all European policy-makers. This book examines the advantages and disadvantages of funding arrangements currently in use across Europe. Adopting a cross-national, cross-disciplinary perspective, it assesses the relative merits of the main methods of raising resources including taxation; social, voluntary and supplemental forms of insurance; and self-pay including co-payments. Chapters written by leading health policy analysts review recent evidence and experience in both eastern and western Europe. The volume is introduced by a summary chapter which integrates conceptual issues in funding with an overview of the main advantages and disadvantages of each method of funding drawn from the expert chapters. This is an important book for students of health policy, health economics, public policy and managment, and for health managers and policy makers.

Abstract

Essential Medical Statistics is a classic amongst medical statisticians. An introductory textbook, it presents statistics with a clarity and logic that will demystify the subject, while providing a comprehensive coverage of advanced as well as basic methods. Book overviewThe second edition of Essential Medical Statistics has been comprehensively revised and updated to include modern statistical methods and modern approaches to statistical analysis, while retaining the approachable and non-mathematical style of the first edition. The book now includes full coverage of the most commonly used regression models, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, Poisson regression and Cox regression, as well as a chapter on general issues in regression modelling. In addition, new chapters introduce more advanced topics such as meta-analysis, likelihood, bootstrapping and robust standard errors, and analysis of clustered data. Aimed at students of medical statistics, medical researchers, public health practitioners and practising clinicians using statistics in their daily work, the book is designed as both a teaching and a reference text. The format of the book is clear with highlighted formulae and worked examples, so that all concepts are presented in a simple, practical and easy-to-understand way. The second edition enhances the emphasis on choice of appropriate methods with new chapters on strategies for analysis and measures of association and impact.
